This is a design on the inlet portion of a turbine engine that allows for things heavier than air (stones, ice chunks, chuahuahua's etc) to seperate from the inlet airflow preventing damage to the engine.
It works by forcing the inlet air to 'spin' in a vortex before it enters the compressor stage. This 'spinning' forces out heavier particles by centripital force. and ejects them out before they enter the engine.
