Service academys are two common routes, either the Naval Academy or the Air Force Academy. You have to be 23 or younger by the time you are admitted. Most cadets enter straight from high school. Occassionally enlisted personnel are able to secure admission to a service academy. High entrance exam scores are necessary and one usually has to attend and complete either the Naval Academy Prep school or the Air Force Academy prep School. It is theoretically possible to become a pilot in the Army, but the Army focuses on rotary wing (helicopters) aircraft and one does not need to attend a service academy to do so.

The other option is college ROTC and receive a commission and then enter flight training. The other, but more rare option is to attend a civilian college and study aeronautics and receive flight training there and attempt to enter OCS (Officer Canidate School) and then apply for flight school.
