Why are cabin lights turned off for takeoff/landing?

Question:
They did this at dusk on my flight today - in line with 'normal poilcy' the cabin girl said on the pa.

How do commercial airliners stay in the air if they are so big?

So why?

What are some diffrent types of fuels used at airports ?

Cabin lights don't disturb the pilot - and its not exactly bothering anyone on the runway. Why must I turn on my reading light? I cant go another day without this life or death question being resolved!

I have a college degree and a pilot's license. Could I be a flight attendant?

Thank you yahoo people!

Aircraft Hydraulics?

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! It has nothing to do with comfort, or glare, or distraction, or night vison, it has everything to do with power and efficiency, lights take power, engines make the power, engines burn fuel to make the power, thrust is compromised when power is being used. Because the APU or auxillary power unit is turned off prior to engine start up, the only place the airplane can get power from is the engine generator, that means that more fuel must be burned to keep the generator going at high power output. Same is true for why airplanes only use one air conditioning pack, if any, at takeoff to make sure they are getting the most bang for their buck on the expensive fuel that is literaly dumped into the engines at takeoff thrust. Also, to the flight attendant who posted above, has the FAA changed the law becase my flight attendants announce that window shades must be up in the exit rows :) ... sorry if I spoiled a dream... and ice build up on the wings would probobly not be caught by the flight attendant as they typically have better things to worry about than staring out the window to check for ice that is probobly not visible to them because its clear and the wings are usualy metalic silver in color... so if you really are a flight attendant... what airline do you fly for and why are you looking out the window? If you are and you did see ice just seconds before takeoff and the ice detection equiptment in the cockpit failed, would you run to the cockpit and save the day... my 2 cents...

I Lost my Pilots Licence, Now I need a new one.?

Lights are normally dimmed when taking off or landing during night hours. This is in case of an accident when the power is lost and is to help the passengers adjust to night vision quickly.

can't a commerce student be a commercial pilot?

If the concord hadn't of been decomissioned in 2003, would it have been a space plane in the future?

Because it discourages people from getting up and walking during landing/takeoff.

can a pilot be color blind im but slightly i can see all colors it just shading is a little off?

So the flight attendant can see out the windows. Several years ago there was an aircraft accident that could have been prevented if the flight attendant had seen the problem and notified the pilot. Since thenthe FAA mandated that you have to raise the window shades for takeoff and landing, and also the lights have to go out at night.

Helicopeter flight?

If I remember right, the problem was snow and ice buildup on the wings that the pilots couldn't see. The plane flipped sideways as soon as it took off, most people on-board were killed.

This aviation designer had a lasting impact on early car design as well. Who was the designer, and what was hi

By the way, if the flight attendant couldn't answer this for you, shame on him for not knowing his job!

to prevent a "flying xmas tree" effect:

When is the 747-800 due to be put into service?

it is true "cabin lights don't disturb the pilot" ... but only the pilot of your aircraft, not other pilots in approach / takeoff aircraft nor the people in the control tower...

What determines the frequency of the current produced by an A.C. generator??

I don't know for sure but i think they reserve the power to use for takeoff and landing. i know that it takes a lot of power and thrust to speed up to like 200 mph in a limited distance but don't know exactly why during landing.

Why do some biz jets have more windows on one side (usually the right side) compared with the....?

this is one good question, this reduces pupil dialation, in other words, if the plane has to execute an emergency landing and it is night, and the cabin lights are on completely, your pupils will dialate and you will go off course and possibly walk right into an engine same thing with daytime flights, this creates a greater visibilty, and it also allows for better views so people will know what's going on with the plane
