Can we install flight data recorder of one type of aircraft on another aircraft?

Question:
What do we actually look for if we want to install the FDR on another aircraft. Do we need to develop a different FDR that suits the architecture of the specific aircraft or we only need to do some changes in the data acquisition units?

I saw a commercial airline pilot's cap for sale online - is this legal?

Some flight data recorders encode and compress their data. Also, the calibration of the sensors, word per frame, word placement in a frame, can be totally different. Chances are very slim they would be compatible, so yes, you'd need to review and recertify all the data acquisition front end as well.
My advise would be NOT to attempt it, it can be hellish.

how long is a flight to washington dc from san francisco?

As long as the Cannon plugs are the same it should work for different type Aircraft. For Example I know the C-130 and the C-17 use the same FDR. The only problem is maybe the mounting bracket. Now My knowledge is limited to just USAF Aircraft but the logic sounds right. The FDR's are still recording the same regardless of the type airframe.
