Aircraft flaps are used for takeoff and landing, they makes a wider wing to let the plane to fly slower. All the other direction surfaces works pushing down or up the wing or airplane tail to go up, down or to the sides. When you turn your controls to the right, right aileron goes up and left aileron goes down and viceversa.
