It depends on what type of aircraft pilot you want to become.

If you just want to get a private pilot's license, there are many private flight schools in the US.

If you mean to become a commercial airlines pilot, there are a number of different ways.

Problems with ATC and pilot communication?

The Army does have some fixed wing pilots, but most Army aviators fly rotary wing aircraft (helicopters). One could apply to the Naval or Air Force Academies. However only the top grads are considered for flight training. Many people may meet the grade scholastically, but fail the flight physical. College ROTC is another avenue, but again only the top grads would be considered.

Another route is attending an aeronautical college. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is the leading private institution in the US. This is recommended because most leading airlines require a college education.

Most of these schools are located in the southern part of the U.S. where there is good flying weather year round. Even if you do go through and earn a license to fly the big jets that the airlines use, most major airlines will still require that you complete their flight school.
