Question:
I have looked at the Fairey Rotodyne Aircraft developed in the 50's and wonder; With modern technology and noise reduction, could this type be a viable commuter A/C in crowded (i.e. cities) enviorment? This type had a Rotor for vertical lift (operated like a gyroplane, but with tip jets to start rotation, VERY loud, but was fixed during forward flight) and a short wing with engines attached for forward movement. Comments? even if an engine failure occured it would land under control with its rotor acting as a helicopter's would.
Answers:
How many airlines/airways company are there in this world?
To put the noise issue in perspective, overall noise levels were comparable to contemporary airliners such as the DC-8, Trident etc.Why is there lights on the wings of a plane?
I'm sure these issues could have been overcome and the Rotodyne (and aircraft like it) would have been a success as a short range airliner and in military roles, similar to todays V-22 Osprey.
