In order to obtain a position as a controller in the US you must attend an FAA approved school that offers the AT-CTI (Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative) program. You must be a US citizen, be under 31 years old, be able to pass the physical exam (exam is between a class I and class II medical for pilots), and be able to obtain proper security clearances. At some point you must take the AT-SAT test and score above 70%.

As far as the education process it is different for each school. I attend MTSU as a Aerospace Administration Major enrolled in the CTI program. At MTSU it is an add on concentration requiring more classes that are more ATC oriented.

Characteristics one would probably need to have would be: Good situational awareness, ability to handle high stress situations, quick decision making skills, good memory, clear speaking voice, and an affinity towards following rules.
