Have you seen an aircraft disappear instantly, completely, in the night sky?

Question:
It seemed so surreal. I was lying in bed, - awake, not dreaming - looking at the stars (yes I can see the sky easily from my room - and f.y.i. I'm on the 17th floor).

Airliners.net advertising question....?

I noticed an illuminated aircraft on the right of my view. It was big enough not to be more than a few kilometres away. It was aircraft-shaped - elongaged. It emitted a fiery bright orange, constant (unblinking) light.

Is avionics electronics a good field to go into?

It moved slowly (like a bomber) in a straight line. Suddenly it sparkled brilliantly, exactly the colour of fire - then it vanished completely!

which is the longest non stop flight? which place?

Notes: The plane was completely silent. I couldn't detect a single cloud nearby. The craft didn't reappear. This was no insect. Animals don’t fly so straight. Also, people don't fly private jets in my country.

Are commercial airport runways heated? How do they keep them ice-free?

Could this be a military reconnaissance plane? Do pilots turn off the lights sometimes? And please, no UFO jokes, OK?

Answers:

What is an (airplane) engine stub shaft?

It's possible that you witness a military aircraft just went on afterburners, and off burner, lights off and gone. But then again you said "Silent", our planes are NOT!
I think you just witness a UFO, no pun intended. You are not alone. There are things I saw in the sky that I cannot explain.

What do i have to learn to get my PPL? Physics, math, english.....i know... but what part of them?

There are a couple of things it could likely have been. There are many other mysterious, but unlikely things, but here's the most likely. Either a meteorite, which would leave a trail of orange "fire" as it burns up in the atmosphere, then simply burn out and vanish, or it could have been a spacecraft. Since meteorites are moving extremely fast, I would bet it was a spacecraft, like a satellite or the International Space Station. The thing with spacecraft, especially the International Space Station, is that they are sometimes visible as a bright star-like object just after sunset or before dawn, when the sky is very dark but the spacecraft is illuminated by the sun as it orbits above you. The ISS is only about 200 or so miles up, and it's pretty big, so it appears as a slow-moving, silent, unblinking "aircraft". As soon as it moves into the shadow of the earth, it vanishes. I think it's one of the coolest things. Check out this site, and you can find out when the ISS and other spacecraft are going to pass over your location.
