why does aircraft always take land route rather than sea-route though sea route is quite short??

i like watching aircrafts too. well in the US, there is a cite in the US that tracks some airports and you monitor them. Im not really sure about the UK. It is legal to watch it in the US and im not too sure. try passur.com for flight monitoring
