There have been a ton of studies about this plane. There seems to be a weak connection to the tail being the cause of some in flight breakups. The majority of accidents involving the V-tail Bonanza are still pilot error. The modifications to the older model tails have never been prov-en effective yet they are still flying (some without the mods). The wings also ripped off several of these birds in flight but everyone focuses on the tail. Even the tail failures that occurred are mainly attributed to pilot error (flutter management, spiral divergence, over-speed, and Dutch roll). The V-tails were made larger and stronger in the 60's but still had some bad traits for unskilled pilots. Is there a shortage of A&P Mechanics today?
This used to be called the forked-tail Doctor killer. Doctors could afford it but didn't have the skill to fly such a hot plane and drilled holes in the ground with it. There are others (even the Malibu) that have similar reputations but the V-tail was just too big of a publicity target to avoid the controversy. They stopped producing the V-tail only because the publicity was so bad.
