About Cessna trim tabs?

Question:
can a Cessna trim tab get out of line? I notice that when i am flying i have to trim the nose all the way forward and it still wants to rise. It used to not do this. I am not runninng with more than 25rpm's when this is occuring, my speed is normal cruise for a Cessna 172. I can't figure out what the problem is?

does any one remember when the SR71 flew under the shuttle?

Yes it is very possible.

What might be happening if it isn't a weight and balance problem is something might be limiting the forward (nose down) travel of the trim.

what does ifft stand for?

Always check the trim full travel on the ground before you fly, it should have slightly more nose up (trim tab trailing edge down) travel than nose down travel and takeoff should be slightly trailing edge down (interestingly enough, Cessna doesn't specify in the rigging instructions the position of the takeoff setting).

What can happen is the indicator can jump a track. It works like a record with a spiral groove in the trim wheel that moves the needle. If the indicator needle reaches the end of the groove, the trim will jam before it reaches the stops. This can also happen if either chain (one at the wheel, another at the actuator) overruns the sprockets.

Another problem I encountered was during colder weather, the trim cables would slacken and the stops (which look like large fishing weights holding the two cables together when you look down the tail cone) would weigh the cable down and come into contact with the bulkheads. The trim would be stuck in the takeoff position and the plane would want to keep nosing up in cruise.

Make sure you get a mechanic to look at it if you are sure C of G isn't an issue.

If it is not behaving normally, something is wrong. I wouldn't fly it until a qualified A&P mechanic looked at it and hopefully fixed it.

Also, is there anything that has altered your weight and balance, like a piece of luggage way in the back of the plane?

i understand that a helicopter has rotors on top to lift it off the ground?

It is indeed possible for a trim tab to get out of whack; it could have been struck by a passing vehicle or suffered some other indignity. But the problem may be in the horizontal stabilizer cabling. Have someone sit in the cockpit and push the wheel forward and back, and also operate the vertical trim wheel while you are watching what is going on. If you can't spot the problem, and probably even if you can, it's time to talk to your friendly A&P guy.
Postscript: I note previous responder's reference to weight and balance. He's right, of course, so see if there's an anvil lurking in the back of the baggage compartment.
