Being good in math is a good idea. Joining the air force is even better but not necessary. 20/20 is ideal but not 100% necessary. I actually work for a flight school. I advertise for the company. our programs usually cost between 7,000 and 10,000 dollars to receive your license. you are required by the FAA to have at least 40 hours of flight time and we will make sure you are prepared for your written, oral, and check ride.
A good flight school will have the same qualities. Shop around and look for the cheapest school in your area.

Lots of good responses to this. I need to add one more item: you'll need a fat wallet. Getting your private rating will cost around US$6,000. You will need an instrument rating; that will be another $5,000 or so. To build up enough time to be of interest to commercial carriers, you will have to put on many hundreds of additional flight hours; many people get flight instructor ratings (you need a commercial rating also -- another several thousand bucks) and teach flying to build time. If you can get into the air force and fly, that will be a big help -- not only will you get paid for doing all of this, but you'll get turbine engine time, which is hideously expensive if you have to buy it out of your own pocket.
