I flew for an airline that gave me one answer to this question. The capt. which sits on the left side of the plane has a view of all the pax loading onto the plane. We were told to look out for anything out of the norm while pax were boarding. It's kinda like a last second visual screening done by the capt.It depends on what position and/or the way the aircraft is parked at the deboarding/boarding gate of an Airport. Here in our Airport (ZAM/RPMZ eventhough the most common is on the left side, but ussually the doors are opened on trhe right.

When jetways came into play, they figured it would be easier to have them point the same way to go on the same side of the aircraft (why havent they made gas fillers like that on cars?)
