there is a jumbo jet boneyard here in tucson goes on for miles, 1000+ have disassembled jumbo jets, row after row of them.
with an auto junkyard, people go and buy starter motors, doors, fenders, etc,
but i cant imagine someone with a jet going to this boneyard and asking for a new wing for a 747?
why don't they melt down, recycle all those montrosities?

Older planes are taken and held in desert storage to prevent rust and rot. They are sometimes bought back to full service or sold to other users (other militaries, Forest service for Fire bomber conversions, Civil war bird buyers). Others get striped for parts. That's how we keep old planes like the b-52 still flying after 50 years. that just done make the parts any more. Others are turned into target drones for live fire practice( think the ultimate RC plane, a Real F4 Phantom II Mach 2 jet). The rest do get shredded and chopped up.
