Discussion of relative merit of taildraggers versus trigear airplanes?

Question:
we are considering purchase of a single engine plane and wish to have advice on purchse of a taildragger versus a trigear .

Answers:

Should I quit flying?

Taildragger requires a "better pilot", is a little harder to taxi, and is a little easier to "stand on it's nose and flip over (if not handled properly) -- but will land in tougher terrain without damaging the undercarriage, - it will also get airborne quicker if taking off in "scrub brush" or taller garss! This is because it is already "pointed up" when you start, and has one less wheel dragging in the grass!

who was the first person killed in an aircraft accident?

Tri-gear aircraft is harder to "stick the nose in the ground"! It is easier to see when taxi-ing, and is easier to steer. On the ground it is more "like driving"! And somewhat easier to preflight!

Why do some airlines dim the cabin lights for take off and landing, while others, like Ryanair, don't?

Personally I prefer the "taildragger" - as I am an "old time- pea patch" pilot"! I like to fly into non paved airstrips (less people and traffic), -- and of course I'm a "country boy". Generally speaking the taildragger is less expensive than a tri-gear also -- if you want a little bigger airplane you can invest in a taildragger that is a little bigger for about the same money! And of course no matter how or why you end in some remote field - you might be able to get down without "pranging the aircraft- or yourself"!

what is the function of the aircraft engine?

cant see were you are going with a tail dragger while taxiing-but they look cool

how to become a pilot ?

tail draggers can be slowed down faster on the runway and they are eaiser to taxi on the ramp. and they are eaiser to land after you learn the secret of landing them.

Here, here on most of what the other guys said, but there's one other point you might want to consider. The cost of insurance.
Since taildraggers do require a little more skill in ground handling, it wouldn't surprise me if they cost a lot more to insure than trigear A/C. You might want to check with your insurance agent.

Douglas D is definitley right about the insurance.

Tail draggers require more attention that tri-gear for landing and taxiing, but for the most part they are not as difficult to handle as people make them out ot be.

How do you become a fighter pilot in the US air force?

Tail draggers have better short-field performance (due to the stall-attitude of the aircraft in the three-point position) and more clearance for the prop. The tail wheel has virtually no weight on it and doesn't dig into the ground like a nose wheel does.

does one hour of flight equal to one cycle ? (jet engine J-85)?

But tri-gear remains the most popular because of the easy landing and taxiiing, the good visibility on the ground and the nice level attiude. (There is nothing worse than trying to pull out a bottle of water while waiting to take off on a hot day and have it roll on the floor to the rear bulkhead).

What does "Mach" stand for?

Price wise there isn't much difference because often taildraggers are specialty airplanes that are well sought after (Compare a four-seat 172 to a two-seat Super Cub at $50K a piece)

What is one of the limitations for using inert gas on the flight line?

Taildraggers are my fav (next to floats) and are very fun.

what is the smallest plane?

Tricycle gear is easy to land and taxi.
A taildragger has a tendency to weather vane into the wind which makes the aircraft want to lead with the tail.
Good constant control is needed taxiing and landing a taildragger.
Insurance is higher because of the tendency for ground looping.
If you want to consider a taildragger, get training.
The difference is a major change in the way you handle an aircraft.
The taildragger is better on grass strips. You can get the tail up faster and hence you need less distance lifting off against a trigear because you have resistance on only two wheels.
In wet grass that is an advantage.
A taildragger has less maintenance so that is a plus.
I cannot emphasize enough to get proper training and read up on taildragger training as it can save you a lot of embarrassment and cost.
