What is the speed of an aircraft?

Question:
What is the speed of an aircraft just before take off?

Answers:

Are you allowed to own a Mig and fly it in America. on the same note could i buy a 747 and fly that to?

Of a commercial liner their airspeed varies from 250 - 300 knots. A turboprop such as an ATR, or Dash 8, would top out around 250 knots in the air, but a larger liner such as a 767 or a 747 will have an airspeed as high as 320 knots. However there are restrictions: below 10,000 ft aircraft may NOT exceed 250 knots, this is solely for spacing of approaching and departing.
When an aircraft is taking off there are many factors to consider; speed, gross weight, amount of flap (a larger wing surface has a greater lift) and temperatures and humidity. In normal conditions an aircraft will take off around 130 - 160 knots. The speeds for V1 (decision speed - once reached takeoff must continue) VR (the speed the aircraft pitches up) and finally V2 (the speed at which the aircraft should be off the ground) are determined by the on-board computer or FMC. The pilot simply enters the planes weight into this handy tool and these speeds are calculated in seconds. When 80 knots is reached on the takeoff roll the co-pilot calls out "80 knots" and the captain checks the main gauges, providing everything is good the aircrafts speed advances to V1, or decision speed, once this speed has been reached there is no going back - takeoff MUST continue, this is also called out by the co-pilot. VR, or rotation speed is usually about 5 knots above V1 and the co-pilot will call out "rotate" and whether the engines burning up or everythings great the captain will pitch the plane up and should hopefully be climbing when "V2" is called out. The gear is retracted, as are the flaps and the plane sails away into the sky.
VR is usually 150 knots on large aircraft and120 on Regional jets.

are airplane tickets cheaper if you buy them at midnight on travelocity, orbitz, expedia, hotwire, etc.?

as fast as they can before they run out of runway

What causes jets flying in the sky to leave white trails behind them? Why do some leave longer trails?

The takeoff speed depends on aircraft weight, lift (wing area) , outside air temperature and altitude of the runway. Assuming all the above are at optimum the speed can vary from about 50 knots for a STOL (short takeoff and landing) aircraft to about 180 knots for a F104 fighter.

how many rooms are there usually on a space shuttle?

well many are various considering we have so many diffrent models like cars which ones the fastest from 0 to 60 but the avreage take off speed nesessary for most plains excluding commercial aircraft is 30 to 60 miles an hour.

what is the chance of someone (me!) to start their own airline %wise out of 6 billion?

what aircraft are you specifying....
I mean you could be talking about the Wright Brothers Flyer or the Boeing 748F!

What is the safest Swedish Private Jet made today?

Generally speaking that would be Vr, or the rotation speed. All aircraft of differing class & type have a different Vr.

When flying an F-16 what are the best tactis to?

if you mean just broad spectrum aircraft, anywhere from 50 to
350 knotts.

Do birds avoid flying into clouds like VFR pilots?

Well, you have ground speed, indicated airspeed, calibrated airspeed, true airspeed.
all measured in either knots or miles per hour.
The PA 28-180 (Piper Cherokee) I fly, around 70/80 mph ( indicated)
depending on load, wind, density altitude etc.
According to my GPS, the Boeing 737 I recently flew on (as a passenger)from Philadelphia to Raleigh rotated around 130 knots

What makes lightening strike an aircraft in mid air?

depends on the aircraft
performance factors
wind
runway length
soft field or short field
max effort
etc...etc......
