Question:
How short does a runway have to be in order to be considered a "short field"? I think it's 3,000' but I can't find it on the net.
Answers:
In the POH of the aircraft, it will show you the shortest length needed to take off at certain altitudes and temperatures.
A cessna 172 takes about 1000' fully loaded. It gets significantly shorter with lighter loads and with headwinds.
The POH also gives the distance required to take off and clear a 50ft object.
can things flying without wing?
There is no specific lenght. If you need to make a short field landing then it is short. To a Boeing 747, a 3,000 ft runway is short, but to a Piper Cub, it is a good length of runway. Can anyone help me with this question I had on a JAR engineering test?
Sometimes, general aviation fields are related with the term. I relate it mostly to landing strips. How to become an airplane mechanic?
Private and/or fields that do not have facilities can too be called short-fields.
It is totally up to what you are landing. Look at it this way: It is a short field if it is around 120% (or shorter) of the minimum landing roll for the airplane you are flying.
Do airline pilots ever get scared when they're taking off and landing those huge airliners?
It is aircraft specific. What is the landing speed of a boeing 747?
GenAv generally less than 2000 feet.
Which material is best suited to build a light weighed aircraft?
Generally all high performance aircraft have minimum field requirements and many adjust their takeoff thrust for a 'balanced field' takeoff, regardless of actual field length.

And please look at the takeoff requirements of your aircraft before landing and add a healthy margin. Someone who is landing a battered 172 on a strip that is 120% of the POH landing roll is going to have a terrible surprise taking off.
A common mistake every one makes. The term Short-field refers not to the distance required to land or take off. the distance the pilot wants to land or take off will determine a short field. example: you flying A C-172 And make a stop At X field. the weathers great but the runway you must land on is ground, not smooth very bumpy. do you land and roll as long as you want. NO you make it a short field landing. another instance you have to take off on a grass runway, but it was raining the last few days the ground is soaked, your plane will take ages for it to reach the take off speed.so you do a short field take off.
So a Short Field depends Not on the plane but the Pilot.

Have to agree with CalNickel he knows what he is talking abouton this for sure. I knew it is less than 2000 feet but I like the rest of his response. Cal seems well informed.

Here is my personal definition of a short field: I think that a field is short when a maximum performance take off is required, together with good pilot technique to get in and out safely in the aircraft you're flying. Many factors contribute- for example aircraft type (use that B747/Cub example), weight, and surface conditions. Also any obstacles that could affect the final approach or climb out must be considered.
A 2000' dirt runway in Africa when it's 40deg Celsius with a loaded C206 is short (prays its downhill) LOL
What is your favorite airline? Why?
