The paint is known technically as Zinc-Chromate. It was used on the interiors (not just the cockpits) of virtually all military aircraft until the 1980's. It was used to prevent corrosion on the aluminum. In the late 1980's they discovered that the powder given off by the paint was a potential cancer risk and was banned outright in the USA and many other countries.
