Homebuilt aircraft?

Question:
Is it feasible to make a small 2 seater aircraft from a small diesel engine? i just learned that prop speed is no higher than 3 thousand rpm, and i thought deisel would fit the bill perfectly. I originally wanted to make it out of a 1000cc sportbike engine but then i learned about the rpms. Any other engine ideas, and is this type of aircraft possible? i wouldn't go above a few hundred feet so i want it to be as small and light as possible.

I would think the diesel will be too heavy to make a lightweight aircraft. I'd check the library for alternate plans (you'll need several things other than an engine, like wings, fuselage, body of plane, pilot's license, certified mechanic to sign off on the work done, inspection, etc.). I would think that the sportbike engine, with some sort of prop reduction gear might be a better choice, since it's probably air cooled, but again, I'd check the library or a newstand that features homebuilt aircraft to make sure you're not biting off more than you can chew.

That sounds possible. you would have to make sure you balanced it good and fiberglass would be good for the body because its light. that is a really cool idea though.

A diesel engine may be too heavy, as they are already built more rugged with the compressions they use. A gasoline or other alternative engines will have less weight..

Sure it's possible, but unless you have your pilots license there are restrictions as to who can fly it. The easiest solution is to build an ultralight
US stipulations:
-single seat vehicle
-less than 5 US gallons (19 L) fuel capacity,
-empty weight of less than 254 pounds (115 kg),
-top speed of 55 knots (102 km/h)
-maximum stall speed not exceeding 24 knots (45 km/h)
-only allowed to fly during daylight hours and over unpopulated areas.
Weight allowances can be made for two-seat trainers, amphibious landing gear, and ballistic parachute systems.
