Look I Am A Pilot for british airways and colin is right, it is so that your eyes become more used to the dark so then your eyes dont have to adjust to the dark to the light and to the dark again and also, we have emergency light all the way on the floors of our planes. it makes the emergency lights more visible. the lights show you the way to the emergency exits on either side of the aircraft, in the case of an emergency or evacuation.
