Why do semi trucks make loud noises as they drive by on the freeway?

Question:
I hear them all the time because I live next to the freway but it sounds like they are letting out some gas or something haha. Sounds almost like an airplane but stops after a few seconds. If you know what im talking about then good, if not im sorry for being so vague but I cant describe it anymore.

How does driving with windows rolled down affect my gas mileage?

It's called an engine brake, or Jake brake, which releases compression from the engine chambers, slowing the trucks down without having to use the footbrake. Trucks weigh so much that if they used the footbrake alone in some instances, the footbrake would heat up and stop working. Still happens sometimes, hence the "Runaway Truck" areas along major highway downgrades.

What are some good Truck Driving Schools in California?

It's probably running at a high RPM and then changing gears. When you drive, you notice that your car's tachometer will go up to a certain level and then go back down. That's the gear changing. Now magnify that to reflect the difference between your car's engine and the 18-wheeler's engine.

What truck should I get?

More than likely its there muffler on there truck. The might not have one or if they do have one its really rusty..

Are there any services out there that if I loose my car keys someone can call and report them lost?

I would assume it is due to the size of their engines and the wind draft..I have traveled a lot and they have always been that way..sometimes when they pass you..they can make your car move from the air draft!!

Running a red ligh, how much does it cost and how long does ticket come in mail?

What you're hearing is most likely compression braking or a "jake brake" as the old drivers called it. A diesel has very high compression, around 20:1 compared to a typical car's 9:1, and the big rigs can use this to their advantage when slowing to save wear and tear on the brakes. Like you said, it's noisy, and many towns have ordinances against the use of jake brakes, but the drivers still use them at times just we still speed at times.

I need to move a dumped car..?

Sounds like they are slowing down coming into town, and using the Jake brake to do so. (Officially called a Jacob's Engine Brake).

What does "WOT activation" mean in terms of Nitrous Oxide systems for cars?

Unlike the wheel brakes you have on your car, the Jacobs Engine Brake (TM) is a "compression release" engine brake used by large diesel trucks, especially on steep downgrades. To understand how it works, remember that a diesel engine has much higher compression than a gasoline engine, typically 15:1. The Jake brake slightly opens the exhaust valves when the piston is near top dead center (where ignition normally occurs). On the upstroke, the piston compresses the air in the cylinder to 1/15th its original volume. This creates a lot of drag on the engine. The Jacobs Engine Brake then releases the compressed air, and the energy stored in it, before it can push back on the piston during the down stroke. In addition, releasing the compression prevents any fuel in the cylinder from igniting. (Remember, diesels don't have spark plugs like gasoline engines - they rely on compression alone to ignite the fuel.) So, you've got drag on the upstroke, no power on the down stroke.

How many times do you think i'll need to fill up going on a 1200 mile trip in a malibu? (12 gal)?

In short, the Jake brake turns a power-producing engine into a power-absorbing air compressor, thus slowing the truck. The brake sits in a box over the engine. The trucker has a switch in the cab where she can choose how many cylinders to cut out; the more cylinders, the more powerful the slowing of the truck. This illustration from the Jacobs Engine Brake website may make the whole thing a little clearer.

How can I get gas smell out of my trunk?

What you are hearing is called the Jake Brake (after the inventor, the Jacobs Vehicle Systems Inc.) or compression engine brake (sometimes also called a retarder or brake retarder. Usually only found in diesels and only large, on-road diesels.

PT Cruiser?

I know a little bit about cars, the device that keeps motor vehicle engine from being too loud is called a muffler. Some people remove the muffler, so that their cars or trucks can make a louder noise when the engine is combusted, which make their vehicles sound like a race car.
