Ah, that's a little-known test, which is secret knowledge to those 'in the know' guv.Y'see, when the prospective punter kicks the tyre, the rate of rebound and angle of deflection are indicators of the car's true worth and state of roadworthiness.
An experienced tyre-kicker can state the top speed with confidence, to within 5mph just by a swift tap of the rubber with his boot.
The real experts will, in addition to kicking the tyres, turn the steering wheel from side-to-side whilst the car is stationary, and open the bonnet to peer at the engine for some moments.
They might also waggle an obscure lead or piece of tubing in the engine, before dropping the bonnet again.
Then a bit more tyre-kicking.
It's all in the swing of the leg, from the knee - he's an expert: from this hip - he's a chancer.
It's a ritual.

This sort of thing goes way back to the beginnings of cars. Tyres and rubber used to be quite dear, so when someone was purchasing a car, they wanted to make certain that they were getting quality tyres and not some old ones. think of it as checking a horse's teeth! the ones that do it now have no clue whatsoever about autos and are too embarrassed to admit it or bring a friend. after all, when you consider the cost of tyres today, it truly is silly to be concerned about whether or not the tyre will pop from a little kick! while tyre safety is of utmost importance, there are far bigger dangers potentially lurking in a car. Its always a giggle when these 'buyers' start trying to talk as if they know what they are talking about.
I always just say when they start saying about all the non existent faults that well the car will be no good to you then, lock it up and go back inside. You know nicely they are timewasting tyre kickers.
