When I park my manual transmission car, what gear should I leave it in?

Question:
When my dad taught me to drive my manual transmission, he advised that when I park and have the parking break on, I should leave it in first gear. The manual says to leave it in reverse. I usually just leave it in the direction I wouldn't want it to roll (even though I know it wouldn't make a difference). First or reverse? Any info I am missing?

Either first or reverse will work equally well. The manual suggests reverse at it is the 'lowest' gear...meaning the engine will resist picking up speed if the transmission is in reverse more so than first. But by the same token, it will resist in first more than it will 2nd, or 3rd, etc...the resistance becomes weaker as the gears get higher. Reverse is 'officially' the recommended gear, and you'll know if you ever have to re-take your driver's test and put it in first (they'll count off for that). But as long as it's in one of the two and the parking brake is on and working, you should be fine.

which is better? 4th gen prelude or Beetle?

UR rite to leave it in the gear opposite the direction the vehicle could roll.
If level ground, then it doesn't matter as long as the parking brake holds.

I have a 8 hour drive tomorrow.....any tips on how to make it a good road trip?

I drive stick and if I'm parking flat I leave it in neutral, if my nose is pointed up hill I am in 1st and if the nose is pointed downhill I am in reverse

what is ur car??

You are doing the right thing. Always have your handbrake on, if you are facing uphill put gear in 1st gear. If you are facing down hill put gear into reverse. and an extra safety instruction is, turn the wheels to the kerb, then if the car does move, first of all its got to run into the kerb. Well done, safe driving.

does anyone hire drivers to take cars across Canada?

mmm... please mind my IQ over automobiles, but does it have any difference whether we'restopping with 1st or reverse? I always leave my car on the Neutral Gear when stopped. If I'm on slopes, I will pull the hand brakes a bit harder to make sure the car doesn't roll away.

Why is diesel fuel more than high test gas ? I heard that is takes less refining.?

you are correct first or reverse gears only but it does not matter cause when on a hill with car off and no e brake on it will still roll slowly no matter what direction the car is facing always use e brake and if out of adjustment have it looked at by a trained brake tech
