You are not allowed to keep a motor vehicle on a road without it displaying a current excise licence, You have a 14 day period of grace at the expiration of the excise licence. In that time you can keep the vehicle on a road and if it is insured etc, drive it. Once the 14 days has expired you have to complete your off road declaration. once the vehicle has been declared off the road SORN it must be kept off the road,,you cannot keep an unlicensed vehicle on any public road at any time it is an offence,,the so called 15 day cooling off is a real misconception of the regulation, You can renew a road fund licence 14 days before and 14 days after the expiry date but if the licence has expired and you are stopped or the vehicle is seen on the public road without a current valid road fund licence you could be summons for the offence, the fine is up to10 times the amount owed plus a fine from the court,, plus any local traffic warden can put a ticket on the vehicle at any time and have it clamped removed and crushed

* MOT testing station
* VIC testing station
* an approved vehicle weight testing station which covers design weight certificate or plated revenue weight
* reduced pollution test
* provided that adequate insurance cover for your use of that vehicle is in place
