Peugeot didn't have any missteps that bad with their 80s foray into the US market, but the stigma rubs off on them. What's worse is that their cars these days aren't as good as Renault's. If Renault can't overcome the French-car stigma, Peugeot sure as hell can't.

And because of the negative perception towards French cars (nevermind the idiotic France-bashing that goes on apart from cars in the US), it is not worthwhile for Renault and Peugeot to bring their cars into compliance with US safety and environmental regulations. That's a process that can take a while, and requires lots of engineering and testing, it can be quite expensive.

Have you ever heard of a Renault Alliance? It was one of the BIGGEST pieces of crap ever allowed in the US (along with the Yugo). IN FACT, Yugo was here in the US from '86-'87 and the Alliance was here '87-'88. Neither made any kind of impression on US buyers except for how terrible they were. After a major fail in the US market, Renault has not even tried to re-enter.Quite possible that the US doesn't want them. They are in Canada.

They used to export to the U.S. but they stopped in the 80's because they made an inferior product no one would buy the last stab was the Peugeot 505 and the Renault feuago both were fair cars but could not compete against the American Autos , Honda or Toyota because they were not in the same leagueYou what my Friend. both of the two companies you mentioned did sell there cars in canada . i dont know if they did in the states.i owned a renault it was ok i totalled it so i cant say if it was great i will say i never see them on the road now so that cant be good.

i think the reason they dont sell them here is that it costs a huge amount to set up a dealer network. Renault was tied with american motors when it was sold here . i think it was the renault that bought into amc but it could have been the other way round anyway when amc bit the dust and chrysler bought them they didnt carry on with the renualts .
as for peugeot they do sell them here but they are almost as rare as a ferrari . i think that in toronto down town fine cars might sell them that is a place that sells really high end cars. other then that and i remember the doctor across the street had one years ago i dont see them around .
