At what point does it become more economical to turn the engine off or leave it running?

Question:
I've heard that when parked for short periods of time it saves more gas to leave the engine running, because it would take more gas to start the car up again. Does anyone know the general time when it's cheaper to turn the car off? Does it depend on the car?
