not really. For one you would need a transmission twice as big as normal to house all those gears. and 2 time spent between gears is time when 0 power is being transfered from the engine to the wheels. So with 9 gears you would have almost twice as much time spent recieving 0 horse power. 5 or 6 gears is enough as most cars are limited by wind resistence or a governer. I mean you COULD have 9, but it would be pointless.Car wrecked...towing question?
They make new transmissions is some luxury cars that are continuos acceleration. They only have 1 very wide gear. It's shaped kind of like an ice cream cone on it's side and theres a belt going around it. As the car accelerates the belt moves from the tip of the cone up towards where it gets wider thus increasing the gear ratio. very cool, and the car never shifts between gears.

The more gears the slower acceleration. Believe it or not 3 speed tranny car is faster start than a 5 speed. Once you reach high speed 75 mph and up you need that extra gear. Nine gears would be a large gearbox, you'd need a gate at both ends of the gearstick travel, which means you'd probably hit 3rd instead of 1st accidentally quite a lot.
