Most new engines these days are designed for 170,000 miles. Then they should be rebuilt. The cast iron blocks can go though more rebuilds then the aluminum blocks. Aluminum blocks cool faster then the cast iron blocks but they tend to have more warpage compared to the cast iron. If you where to take a cast iron 4 cylinder motor and weight it to an aluminum motor you will find about a 150 lbs difference. The only con I've heard about aluminum engine blocks is that they crack easier in extreme heat.Yes some iron blocks may be durable. There are alloys that manufacturers can use that is just as durable as iron and much lighter. The Aluminum blocks can cool down alot quicker and run cooler. This can help the engine produce more power. Since the incoming air will be cooler and the fuel temps are cooler. Weight reduction on itself is like adding horsepower to a car, one hundred pounds can reduce a quarter mile time by .10 of a second. Look at the Dodge Viper. It has an all Aluminum V-10 engine. It can produce great power.
