Most streets were that way originally. Some areas are preserved for historic reasons; some just never got replacedthey date back to roman times i think. i think they built them all!

Smooth stones were used before there were alternatives like asphalt. I, personally, really like the "Old World charm" look.--so much so that we tore out our existing concrete driveway last year and contracted with a company that brick-paved the entire driveway. It was very time consuming and these brickpavers had to be a lot easier to work with than assorted cobble stones.All "paved" streets were originally all cobbled streets because stones were all that was readily available along time ago!
