Is it better for the environment to keep the old car or get a new one?

Question:
I'm certainly aware that newer cars (especially hybrids) get much better gas mileage than previous models, which is better for the environment, or is it? What about the cost to the environment to build these new cars? How long do they last compared to older cars? I drive a 1993 Saturn SL2, and I'm just curious on what would be the impact if I got a different car (just wondering, there is no way I could afford a new car) like a prius or insight. What if I sold this car and got a new prius? What if I crush this car and got a new prius? What about selling it to a scrapyard? (There is no way I do either of the last 2, my car runs perfectly fine, lol) Just curious on how much of a difference these things really make.

Answers:

How old do you have to be before you can start driving?

It's kinda like the question which came first, the chicken or the egg? If you take your old car to a salvage yard or recycle center, and buy a new car. As far as how long they will last, well. only time will tell. The hybreds are still too new to tell, but knowing the quality of new cars these days, I would say it's a safe bet to purchase a "newer" one.

How much would it cost?

new...it will cost a fortune.
