You dont really need to use diesel at all.Simply vegetable oil and kerosene(paraffin) in the correct proportions (of which im not sure) will be fine.
There are no long term effects.But the fact that fuel supplied by the petrol companies has undergone a high standard of refinement means that it will perform better and the filter will need less changing.

You need to replace some rubbe parts after a while. THey do sell rubberparts to convert diesel engines into ones running on vegetable oil. There's an operation in L.A.. called lovecraft biodiesel. They might sell you the parts or might tell you more about using vegetable oil.

Car tire question?

I have answered a similar question before (see below)
Mitsubishi 'Pajero' run successfully with up to 80% vegetable oil for almost a year with seemingly no ill effects. Sold about 8 months ago and still seen occasionally.
P.S. This was normal vegetable oil bought in (usually) 3 litre bottles from supermarket.
Only thing different was a more frequent change of the fuel filter, but whether that was a necessity or not I don't know. Hope this helps!
