First and foremost, write down all you ordinary and extraordinary expenses, and then see how much would like to keep as savings, after doing the math, whatever is left can be used towards your car payments. Also, if u plan to have the installments, keep in mind a lot can happen in 6 years, marriage, kids, change of location, new job etc. Be wise in ur decision.

I think a good guide will be to list down what are all your minimum necessary expenses every month plus after deducting the monthly instalment for the car, how much will your income would have left. I would say you should cater about at least 30% of your total take home pay for savings.

Depends on how much car you want. I would say that you can quite reasonably get away with buying a used car that will last six years on a $4,000 to $5,000 budget. Anything more is not essential, but can certainly make for a nicer car, so I wouldn't call it frivolous either.
