Premium petrol, is it worth the extra??

Question:
Hi,
My new car is a hot hatch. Reading the manual it suggests filling up with 97+ RON petrol, however will run on normal 95 RON pertol. This petrol is on average 5p more per litre.
Do I really get that much more performance and economy out of the engine with the more expensive fuel?

Answers:

How many traffic cones are there in the UK?

As you had said, the manual SUGGESTs (i.e. it is up to you) you use 97 RON petrol, however you'll find that all european cars are manufactured to primarily use 95 RON petrol as not all fuel stations have 'premium' or whatever. the manual is basically saying that the engine management can optimise itself which ever one you want to use, with regards to the slighter higher octane you will see some performance improvement and possible better 'self-cleaning' propertys (according to fuel companies) to prevent the build up of carbon deposits in the engine.

the problems highlighted by some others people - burning holes in pistons etc. is usually more down to incorrect fuel mixture (e.g. too lean, making the engine run hot). i know on older cars that still run on leaded petrol can end up with damaged valve seats if unleaded petrol was used without the correct modifications (hence all new cars have hardened seats).

for the americans out there, here in the UK we don't have octane as low as 89 or 91 (so far as i'm aware) so that wouldn't pose a problem as for europe its probably the same

Who invented drifting?

I definitely noticed an increased performance when I use RON 97. I put it in about 1 in every 4 fill ups. I drive a Punto. There is a difference. Try both and see what you think. Is it worth it? For me, it's a treat, can't use it all the time, the wife would have a fit! Kids need new shoes, we need to buy food, etc, yak yak.

If your engine compression is above 9.5 to 1, you better use it or you will put a hole in your piston!

What tow numbers have a product of 60 and a sum of -19?

if it says to use 97, then you must use 97. The reason why, is that you obviously bought a car that has a high performance engine. High performance engines have a higher compression ratio.
Premium fuel burns faster then regular, a high compression engine requires a fuel that burns faster. Over time, using a cheaper fuel, it doesnt completely burn, and you get what they call detonation. Its an uncontrolled explosion in the cyl. This could cause your heads to crack, it could bend valves, it could blow up your engine.
Using premium MIGHT do something for performance and fuel economy, but thats not the reason your cars manufacturer says to use it. It NEEDS premium, it CANNOT use regular.

2007 Ford Five Hundred Question?

the higher the rating, the better the inti-detonation capability of the fuel.your vehicle can run on lower RON fuel but you run a greater chance of detonation inside the engine. You can tell when it starts when you punch it and hear a slight pinging noise. In which every drop of moisture in the air that reaches the fuel actually lowers the rating of the fuel. The requirement of the fuel is based on the vehicles programming. My vehicle required 87 octane(us), now I have performance tuned the engine it needs to run on 91 octane.

Can I mix midgrade and high-grade gas?

With my 1995 Ford Taurus that I no longer have (Thank God!), the manual said to use the middle grade of gasoline. I never did because of the price. When I experimented with it once I found that I got a pretty good increase in fuel economy. However, I never tried to figure out whether or not I would make money by using less gasoline. So to answer your question it did help with fuel economy, but as in terms of performance that car had none anyway, so it didn't make a difference.

Billy if you test your car out accurately under the exact same driving conditions etc. the manufacturers recommendations of the higher octane will not only give you better performance over all but also will result in better fuel economy and less wear and tear on engine components...

Any tips or advice on driving an automatic car?

If the manual doesn't suggest using premium, then YOU are spending too much. However, if it says you have to use premium, then beleive them. If you use a lower grade your car (and ultimately you) will pay the price. You should be able to actual hear and feel the difference.
