A school bus carrying high school students veered off an interstate and crashed below an overpass Monday morning, causing numerous injuries.
Television station WHNT reported that police said four were killed, but Huntsville police spokesman Wendell Johnson did not immediately confirm the report. He said Huntsville has never seen a crash like this.
Keith Ward, a spokesman for Huntsville city schools, said the bus was carrying about 20 students when it plunged 30 feet from the road to the crash site below the Interstate 565 overpass. Earlier reports put the number aboard at 30 or more.
Ambulances transported the injured to Huntsville Hospital and Crestwood Medical Center.
The bus was taking students from Lee High School to the Center for Technology in Huntsville.
There was no immediate word on what may have caused the bus to plunge off the interstate in downtown Huntsville.
