I could not say that right side tail pipe exhaust is the norm for vehicles, although casual observations of trucks may agree. I would assume this is because the steering mechanisms are largely on the left. Especially in the case of longitudinally mounted V8s, there is usually more room for pipes, converter and O2 sensors on the side opposite the steering.
