Its a matter of manufacturer design. There are many cars that have the exhaust on the left.I could not say that right side tail pipe exhaust is the norm for vehicles, although casual observations of trucks may agree. I would assume this is because the steering mechanisms are largely on the left. Especially in the case of longitudinally mounted V8s, there is usually more room for pipes, converter and O2 sensors on the side opposite the steering.

That said, there are probably a host of reasons why this may or may not be the norm. No doubt body type and shape as well as safety heavily influence tail pipe location.
