Warming up a car?

Question:
My husband insists on warming up the car everytime, and the peg on the temperature gauge must be on the 2nd line before it's considered warmed up. I can understand this in a cold environment, but not in Phoenix, Arizona! He is also a mechanic and went to school for mechanics, so he must be right. Is he right?Help please!

He is waisting gas and not helping extend the life of the engine at all. In a cold climate its a good idea to warm up the engine for a few minutes or until you can defrost the windows and get some heat. Once the engine is started take it easy until warmed up. No quick take offs etc. It will actually warm up faster with a load on it(driving) There is no need for any other type of oil than what the manufacturer suggest, just a good quality oil of the type and weight specified. There are probably cold start instructions in the owners manual.

yes you should warm up the car. if not it will slowly kill the engine. i usually wait until the prm guage drops to its normal idle. but ya, warming it up helps the car and so does turning off the a/c before you turn the car off.

Why do people feel that 4WD vehicles are safer to drive than FWD or RWD?

newer cars only need a few seconds in your climate before you can drive away. i suggest you use a synthetic motor oil instead of wasting all that gas warming up the engine. even in a very cold climate like parts of canada , you only need a few minutes of idling @ -40f
before you can drive away without damaging any thing . extended idleing isnt even recomended by most car companies.

Im dumb in math and need help!?

He's completely and absolutely wrong, and wasting gasoline to boot! Your car is ready to go as soon as the oil starts circulating.

Tell hubby to use his associates degree for something other than being annoying or to use his degree period! What he is doing is absolutely stupid and has no measurable benefit! I dare him to find a text book that proves me wrong or at the very least proves himself right.

Which is do you think is the best looking Skyline? R33?

if its below 50 deg you should allow about 5 mins for every ten degress below 50, if above 50, just mere seconds as the oil is already warm enough to flow quickly an prevent a condition called dry starting. ( thats when all oil has seeped back into the oil pan,an virtually no oil is in the engine block ). if it isnt cold enough outside for the white smoke ( which is normal with a cold engine/exhaust system ) to come out, i wouldnt bother wasting all the extra gas
