My boyfriend and i have a bet going...he says that a car speedo is set 5 miles an hour faster than it actually reads?! is this right? i think he's making it up so that he can tell me he's going slower than he actually is! actually, you're boyfriend is right..speedo's are set 5 mph fast. Probibly the reason is to give you a chance when going past a speed camera or a radar gun. if you get a ticket for going just 1 mph over the speed limit, you can't mope about it because you were actually doing 6 mph over the limit!
no, it is wrong. if you are having this kind of set up then please fix it, as soon you can other wise if police catch you then you may be guilty and they force you to some penalty and cancel your road worth certificate. i do not know about Indian rule.

As others have said, there is a legal tolerance of plus or minus 10%. It would be impossible to have a perfectly calibrated speedo on every mass-produced car. We have to make allowance for tyre wear. Worn tyres will cause the speedo to show a higher speed because the effective diameter of the wheel will be that little bit smaller than that of a wheel with a new tyre, so would have to rotate faster for a given speed. Every vehicle I have driven since I have had a GPS to compare speeds (I'm assuming that the GPS indicated speed is more accurate than that of the vehicle speedo) has shown a consistent 10% error on the fast side; that is at 30 its showing 33; at 40 its showing 44, and so on. This is not an excuse to habitually exceed the speed limits, though! Remember the speed limit is just a limit, not a target :-)Does it matter what rim size for a car to be booted?
