They got a bog standard Clio, a mid-sized Gti and a tuned-to-the-nuts Scooby Impreza, put supermarket petrol into each and rolling roaded them to get power / torque curves.
Then they did the same with Shell's Optimax petrol to see what the difference was.
Clio - no difference at all with either petrol type
Gti - small increase in power, 5lbft torque increase (not a lot)
Scooby - 5bhp and 15lbft or thereabouts

I guess it depends on whether your car feels more responsive and whether you can get it at a good price. Personally, I don't really notice the difference between Tesco's 99Ron and V-Power.Have a look on www.petrolprices.com to see what the best price in your area is.
