city...on the hway it burns gas..in city mostly elect. They actually get better fuel economy in the city, since the electric motor doesn't make enough power to propel the car on the highway, so it will use the gasoline engine to power it.
How much would you pay for an electric car?
Jeff is right. The other posters are quick to point out thier own ignorance. Are cars like Bugatti Veyron, 2002 Mclaren F1, or koenigsegg CCX street legal in the u.s.?
Hybrids actually work BEST in they city. On the highway, they are the same as any other car. Here is why:
cars use the most gasoline when they are going slowly, and constantly stopping and going. City driving, driving in traffic, etc. gasoline engines are at thier most efficient when they are cruising at highway speeds.
The hybrid helps out by not using the gasoline engine at all when you are going slow in the city and by helping out during acceleration allowing you to use less fuel. Once the car is up to crusiing speed on the highway the gasoline motor takes over.
So in the city the gasoline engine actually doesn't even come on very much at all. If it's not on, you aren't burning fuel.
This is why most hybrids get better fuel milage in the city then they do on the highway.
Glad to see a bunch of non-thinkers responding on this one. As the last couple posters said, hybrid cars always have better RATED city gas milage. Now that doesn't garuntee they'll get better milage in the city, but in general they do. The reason is that every time you use the brakes the car is charging up its batteries which are used to drive the electric motors that help the car along at low speeds. On the freeway you rarely slow down and you're going to fast to use the electric motors, so you're just getting power from a somewhat fuel efficient motor with no help from the "free" power of regenerative braking and electric assist motors.
