How does a car keep track of the miles?!?
I have asked loads of people what they mean and, so far, nobody has been able to shed any light. Can you help?

Speed/distance markers perhaps? I've wondered this for ages. My thought was that they are there so that if the CCTV footage from the stand-alone CCTV cameras (the ones on the big poles) catch anything untoward on the camera, like someone hurtling along at 120mph, the markers would allow the CCTV operators/Police to give a good estimate on their speed. The distance travelled from first coming into shot then up to the white marker divided by time would give this.

i THINK they are police markers for when someone is speeding. they count the time it takes to get to next marker and work out the average speed. but i could be wrong lol.AMY 22 is spot on - they are indeed for gauging speed over a given distance.
