Yellow left arrow light at stoplight?

ok so i was driving in a different city (the city of pasadena in california to be more specific) and i was making a left turn at an intersection with a stoplight and i got the left arrow but there were cars in front of me so i had to wait a little bit. by the time i got through my left turn light turned yellow so i didnt know what to do. later on i was driving and i was at a stoplight on red (not turning left) and the light turned green and i was about to go when the car in front of me turning left cut me off and he had the mysterious yellow left arrow light what exactly does it mean?

Any arrow means that you have a "protected" turn, which means that any traffic that could interfere with you turn has a red light.
