How long should I drive my car before going to for a New York State Inspection?

Question:
1986 BMW 325e- The car is going for its first inspection since I've picked it up. I am almost positive that it will not pass or is at the middle line of pass/fail..I've heard that if you drive it for about 20m before then go for inspection you have a better chance of passing. Also, I've heard of putting rubbing alcohol in the gas to make the engine run hotter to burn build-up and run cleaner...Is that safe? Would anyone recommend that seriously/safely? Is the benefit of doing it noticable?

Do speed camera detectors work?

I kind of share your reservations - it may not pass...
However, having the engine completely warmed up right before the inspection is a must for any vehicle. It's not just 20 min driving - it's preferrably AT LEAST 20 miles at highway speed. Adding random chemicals to gas is a risky proposition - they may help to improve emissions through better combustion, and they also may do that by forcing you to replace the engine with a better one.
Running injector cleaner through the fuel system prior to the test may not be a bad idea. This will clean carbon out of intake manifold, valve ports, EGR, etc. thus potentially improving emissions.
Good luck.
