Can I drive a rental car to my prom?

I know that if you're under 21 or even under 25 you can't actually rent the car. But if my parents rented the car would it be legal for me to drive it?

It dependes on where you live. in ny its actually illegal to refuse a rental of a car to any licensed driver. the company can add a underage surcharge and there is a strict formula for that. in some states only the person named on the contract is permitted it drive. in some states any immediate family member is automatically covered. as much as you want to use a rental car for a prom it might be wiser to use your parents car and they rent a car. in many states you could be charged with a crime. unauthorized use of a motor vehicle can be anything from a summons to jail time of up to 5 years again it depends on the local law. Just remember if you are not supposed to be driving the car and something happens you are fully responsible for the damage and injurys if any in most states. Is it worth risking your parents and you loosing every thing and having your entire life possibly ruined at a young age? I have personally seen court cases go real bad for the customer even with high priced lawers. This one person gave a car to her cousin who then got rear ended. The cousin was hurt real bad. The court ruled against the renter even though the accident was not her fault and she was not driving. She had to pay for the total cost of the rental vehicle, loss of use and the injurys to her cousin. She lost her home and will be paying for it for the rest of her life. I don't want to scare you.. Just tell you the pure risks involved in doing what you suggest.

The trick is to make sure your parents have coverage and they are the signers and they would have to put you on the car as a driver. But it is their credit that gets the car but of course you will tell your little honey that "you" rented the car. lol

And if by chance you get in an accident, you will have to replace the car at your own expense. It is way too risky to try.
No one under 25 years of age can drive a rental car. The reason is the fact that those under 25 are a HIGH RISK for accident and the company does not want to take the chance with young drivers.
Remember, you insurance is null and void too.

In order to be an authorized user of the vehicle, you have to show an ID to the desk person renting the vehicle to you. And if you are under 25, I don't know of any car rental companies that will authorize you to drive their cars. And if your parents rent the car, give it to you to drive, and you crack it up, you are BEYOND screwed. Your parents will be 100% liable for the cost to repair that car to "like new" condition, and that will cost in the thousands of dollars depending on the damage, even if someone hits YOU. Your personal auto insurance will not cover that damage either.
