First off, you will need an L.G.V. licence. All travelling cranes are classed by the D.V.L.A. as trucks, so you will need the appropriate licence.

You would then do best to approach one of the crane hire firms (Marshes, DeMag, Able, GWS, etc.) or The National Association of Heavy Equipment Training Schools (see link below). They would be the best people to ask for advice and guidance in becoming a crane driver.

If you mean the high rise cranes then you have to pay to go to a training school, i think it's around £2,500 for a 3 week course, but don't quote me exactly. A friend did this 2 years ago as there is a shortage of operators, he now earns £700 per week. Luvley Jubley.
