This list is not exhaustive (no pun intended) but you should be able to get any one of these for up to £1000.00. You will probably be looking at something around 10 yrs old and if looked after should give you good service for a few years.

Well first you have to look in the papers and see what they have to sell first. You would not want to put a pound more than a car is worth too. If you are mechanically inclined you can probably get one a way lot cheaper than one that is running good. It isn't just the buying of the car you have to think of the insurance is going to kill you.So very small engined is your only option,nothing bigger than 1.1.As others have said your best bet will be a Fiesta or a Corsa.
Aim for the 4 door models as they tend to be slightly cheaper to insure.
Fiat and VW do some fine small cars aswell.
