How does Walmart keep their shopping carts from going beyond the perimeter of their parking lot?

The left rear wheel has a band on it but doesn't seem to have any type of brake. Can't seem to see how it works,but it does work.

i think it's done by magnet. that won't move beyond the parking lot because the magnet prevents it.

They don't. They have to rely on the customers to put them in the cart corrals and the stockman to bring the carts inside in a timely manner. I work for walmart and we have had our carts go into the street before not a good situation

Apparently there IS some kind of system, which locks the wheels up after it crosses some line in the parking lot, whether magnetic or not, I'm not sure. Probably works on the same principal as the electronic doggy fences and collars, the Invisible Fence. I've never seen one in action, honestly, though.
