Why are so many SUV drivers "yuppies"?

Whyis it that I see so many of these hybrid SUV's in suburbia? These people don't go offroading, don't have weather problems, why an SUV?? They seem to be an incredibly bad choice (not enough carrying room compared to a truck, high center of gravity, hard on gas....kind of like a combination of the worst features of a vehicle)
