Purpose of having engines in the back of a car?

What is the purpose of some cars having their engines in the back of the car, like an Audi R8? Why can't every car have its engine in the front? I'm just curious.

Cars like the VW Beetle (the real ones, not the silly looking ones in production at the moment) have it there for construction purposes. The back axel, differential, driveshaft, gearbox and engine can be put in in one block. Basically for the same reason that most modern cars have the engine at the front.
