I learned in a 1963 VW, if you can drive that you can drive anything!! Test on the automatic for sure. My son just took his test last June. He learned on an automatic but the car he bought was 5-speed. He had to drive my car until he learned to drive his. don't take the automatic test! you will obviously only be able to drive an automatic which to me is a waste of your time and effort. you feel more involved in the driving process when driving a normal car, plus its way more fun. i was 24 when i started learning to drive so i can understand when you say you want to pass quickly, it only took me 4 months to learn and pass, i too contemplated taking the automatic test but was strongly advised not to, so here i am passing on the good advice given to me.Anybody have trouble with gas cans that have collapsable spouts?
i learnt in a vauxhall corsa and i wouldn't recommend learning in an automatic...i didn't find picking up how to use the gears hard, what is hard is driving on the roads...learning what to do stuff which doesn't really make a diff what car your in if that makes sense! if you learn in an automatic you will only have a licence to drive automatic vehicles and this might become problematic in a number of circumstances in the future... borrowing friends cars? the business' car? I was taught how to drive in a Chevy Astrovan. It was a lil' harder because it was larger than a normal car. But, my first car was an 88 toyota corolla. It was a great lil' car. It got me around just fine and it was old so it was ok I beat it up a little bit. You'll definetly want to use an automatic. They are easier to drive.Good luck and hope this helps!!

I used a friends camaro to take the test the instructor said it seemed as if i had been driving for years.
doesn't matter what you drive in, because you get used to that car, plus you are at the LEARNING stage , yes car does matter in smoothness, I would strongly recommed that you learn gear , rather than automatic , do not think its hard I too, felt that driving is hard, if you pass gear you and drive automatic , and if you just pass on automatic you have to do a test for gear , meaning you can't drive gear unless you have passed the test, its not hard ,do it , and good luck too you.
I tried to learn to drive at 21 in a Nissan micra manual, then stopped for 5 years, then learnt to drive properly in a BMW 320. I should never have waited five years, but better late than never.
I enjoyed learning to drive in a manual, listening for the gear change in the beginning was new, and now changing gears and using the clutch, is second nature, as it will be to you, if you choose to learn manual.
